External and internal thankfulness

Thanksgiving has come and gone for both Canada and the US. The season urges us to reflect on what we're thankful on. Most of us concentrate on external items - our friends, family, job, etc. Now is the time to turn your reflection inward.

It's great to be aware of all the wonderful people aound us and be thankful for them and our current circumstances. (It's okay if you not 100% thankful, we are human after all). We should spend time reflecting on what we're thankful for. But we rarely think about what we're thankful for inside of ourselves.

Some of it is the fear of being seen as egotistical - none of us want to be "that guy" who brags about how amazing they are. But it's okay to admit that you have aspects of yourself you're thankful for. Again, maybe no 100%, but that's okay, you can work on them later. Right now I want to to think about what parts of yourself you're thankful for.

Is it your creativity? Your boundless knowledge of some piece of exotica? Maybe your health, or if that's too broad, the fact that your feet don't hurt every day. There's always something inside of us to be thankful for and proud of. It's going to feel a little uncomfortable - most of us are condiditoned to not think this way. It's considered bragging, and tacky. But just this once think about it. I'll start

I'm thankful for

  • My creativity (with PowerPoint, don't ask more out of me than that!)
  • My ability to adapt quickly to changing situations
  • My new artificial knee and the ability to be active again
  • My generosity. I love to share what I have with others
  • My hair (hey, there's nthing wrong with liking how you look!)

Now it's your turn. What are you thankful for? Understanding yourself doesn't just mean focusing on the areas of improvement. It alsom means embracing what makes you happy.

The physiological safety foundation

This is not a political post, but I want to take the time to investigate how some people are contributing to poor psychological safety.

Short circuiting FUD

With all the recent layoffs and banking concerns, let’s talk about FUD and how you can help short circuit it. FUD stands for fear, uncertainty, and doubt. We tend to fear what we don’t know, because once upon a time this was a good way to not get eaten. Likewise, we tend to extrapolate from current  […]
